So, I have made the no-waste berry challenge this year. I'm going to prolong my berry eating, without waste with two easy techniques.
Freezing and Macerating.

Freezing:
Why let berries go bad when you can freeze a bunch for those winter days? I froze the bulk of my fresh raspberries last year and enjoyed them all winter long. I made shakes, pies or just enjoyed them over pancakes whenever I wanted. So fantastic when you are craving some tasty fruit.
Freezing is simple enough. Wash your berries or fruits and let them dry. Remove any stems, pits and hull your strawberries. Cut them into any desired size or leave them whole. Line a wax paper in a baking pan and arrange your berries, keeping space between them. Pop them in the freezer. Once frozen, you can put them into freezer bags and since they are frozen individually, you can take out as little or as many as you wish later on.

Macerating:
I often macerate my fresh fruits and berries. It's a delicious way to prolong the fresh berry eating. I often eat my macerated fruit over ice cream, use it on pancakes or my yogurt or just even eat them like that.
Wash all your fresh fruit and cut them into your desired sizes. Place them in a bowl, sprinkle them with sugar and mix. With a little time, the fruits release their juices and makes it very flavourful. I then pop it into the fridge and use it up within a couple of days. It's an easy technique that prevents any berries being thrown out.

Both these techniques can be used for all sorts of berries and fruits. I often mix up different fruits together too. Good luck!
You are one smart cookie!!
ReplyDeleteI use the gobble technique. If I buy strawberries I eat them all the same day :)
I also do them up in the pressure cooker with some apples - great if you like applesauce.
I wonder if strawberrys will ever be ready to pick this summer - the weather has been so cold!
I do the gobble technique too. But, I find that my eyes are much bigger than I can gobble down because I often buy way too many berries to start with!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a pressure cooker but thats a great idea to make various sauces for sure. I've made a lot of applesauce the last two years (I have 2 big apple trees in my backyard). Unfortunately, my kids are the only kids on earth that don't like applesauce! So I actually freeze tubfulls for using in cakes/muffins later on.
Two great tips on preserving fruits a bit longer. My hubby keeps insisting on buying huge boxes of fruits from costco and we always have trouble trying to finish them. These two techniques will come In handy. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I freeze all my berries as I pick them if I am not eating them that day - single layer on a parchment cookie sheet, then bag them up. Love that. And, Vanja loves lots of sugar on his.
ReplyDeleteI just learned something new! Compressing fruit with a vacuum bagging machine. I hope to do a post on it soon... but, who knows. There are a lot of those waiting in line. You just vacuum pack them, and refrigerate for 3 hours and eat immediately. They are very dense and delicious.
